Add Library Printers (Mac)

To successfully print from your personal Apple computer, you must know which version of OS-X you have (by clicking   > About this Mac) and follow the following 4 steps.

  1. Add the Printer Drivers
    1. If your computer is running OS-X 10.8 or higher, download and install this file.
    2. If your computer is running OS-X 10.4-10.7, download
      1. this file for the B/W printer
      2. (optional) this file for the color printer
    3. After expanding, open the folder MacOSX, and pick the correct folder corresponding to your version of OS-X.  Run the installer contained therein.
  2. Add the Library Printer
    1. Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, and click the (+)
    2. Control+Click (or right-click) on an icon in the toolbar, and select Customize Toolbar…

    3. Drag the Advanced icon into the toolbar, and click Done.

    4. Click the Advanced icon, and enter the following (or copy-paste the text below this picture):

      1. Type: Windows printer via spoolss
      2. URL: smb://lib-printserver/Library-BW
      3. Name: Library-BW
      4. Use: Select Software… SHARP MX-565N PPD
        1. Locate it quickly by typing 565 in the Filter search box.
      5. Click Add
      6. Setting up printer options:
        1. Set Input Tray Options: Large Capacity Desk
        2. Click Ok
    5. (Optional) To add the library color printer, repeat these steps substituting these in Step 4:
      1. Type: Windows printer via spoolss
      2. URL: smb://lib-printserver/library-1f-color
      3. Name: library-1f-color
      4. Use: Select Software… SHARP MX-5141N PPD
        1. Locate it quickly by typing 5141 in the Filter search box.
      5. Click Add
      6. Setting up printer options:
        1. Set Input Tray Options: Four Trays
        2. Click Ok
  3. Add PaperCut Client
    1. PaperCut requires Java 5.0 or greater.  If you haven’t already installed the latest version, get it here.
    2. Download the correct PaperCut client:
      1. For OS-X 10.7+
      2. For OS-X 10.4.-10.6
    3. Expanding the file will create a PaperCut directory in the same location.  Inside it, double-click the client-local-install.app
      1. You may need to adjust your security settings to allow the client to run.  If you are prompted, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Under the General tab, Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere.
      2. Follow the prompts, and click Ok.
    4. Once the software installation completes, the PaperCut client icon is installed in the Apple menubar, and you will be presented with a Login box.  Enter your Moodle username and password, check Remember my identity, and click Ok.

      The PaperCut client will display your account balance.
    5. PaperCut must be running in order to print.  Set it to run automatically when you restart your computer by opening System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.  Click the (+), under Applications select PCClient, then click Add.
    6. Print a test document to the library printer:
      1. You may be prompted for a login to access the printer.  If you encounter a dialog box that looks like the following picture, enter the information below it.  You should only have to do this step (6.1) once.

        1. Username: guest
        2. Password: guest
        3. Check: Remember this password in my keychain
      2. Next you will be prompted by PaperCut for your Moodle Username and Password.  Select Remember Until I logout to avoid being re-prompted with every print during your session.

    7. After you print to a library printer, you will see conformation that the job is received by the PaperCut client.

  4. Add Credit to your Account
    1. In order to print or copy, you will need to add credit to your account.  Fifth & Broadway has various pricing tiers to reduce your printing costs.
