Library Computing Services

November 5th, 2009 • Robb Brunansky

Over the past year, the library has dramatically expanded its computing services department, adding nearly 30 new workstations, upgrading the wireless network, and implementing a new printing/copying solution. Today, we updated our website with a link to Library Computing Services (LCS) to provide more information on what computing services are available in the library and how to use them. In addition, there is now a page on our website where you can email library technical support staff if you are having computer problems or difficulty printing.

Add Money to Your Shield Card Online

October 6th, 2009 • Robb Brunansky

The conversion to our new payment system for copying/printing is now complete as the website to add money to your Shield Card is now available at https://theshield.sbts.edu. From this website you can also manage your Shield Card account, report if your card has been lost or stolen, update your email address, and more. For a short tutorial on using the new site, watch the video below:

Printing/Copying Payment System Upgrade

September 11th, 2009 • Robb Brunansky

This past week Southern Seminary upgraded its Shield Card payment system for copying/printing on campus. This change directly impacts the library, where most self-serve copying/printing occurs. We think you will appreciate our new system for two reasons. First, the new system works almost exactly like the old system. That means there is not much of a learning curve if you are used to how things were previously. Second, the changes we did implement will make it easier for everyone to copy/print in the library. So what are these changes? You will notice two things that are different.

First, there is no longer a minimum balance required to make a copy or print a document. The system will allow you to print/copy however many pages you can with the funds on your Shield Card with one swipe. (Disclaimer: Technically, there is a 500 page limit per swipe, which is one ream of paper. We intentionally set this limit ridiculously high so that in practice the number of pages you could print/copy per Shield Card swipe would limitless.) This change should come as welcome news to people who just want to print one page without putting a couple dollars on their Card as well as to those who want to copy/print larger documents and would have to swipe their Card multiple times to print/copy the entire job.

Second, because the new system supports departmental codes for printing, after swiping their Shield Cards, students making personal copies/prints will have to press the ENT key on the card-swipe device to release their jobs (or wait 10 seconds and it will automatically advance, but I know you’re in a hurry and will want to press the ENT key to get done as quickly as possible). If you are interested in using a departmental code to print, 5th & Broadway has all the information you need to get set up.

Apart from the card readers themselves, we also have updated the web site where you can use a credit card to add money to your Shield Card. The site has been streamlined to make adding funds more intuitive. New features have been added as well, including the ability to view your transaction history online and cancel your Card in case it gets lost or stolen. We are still working out a few more details with the web site, but it should go live within the next week or so. I’ll post an update once it is available. In the mean time, you can add funds in the library using the Value Add Station (or, as it is sometimes called, “the black box”) on the main floor between the two copy machines.

We have worked hard to bring you the best printing solution available, and we hope these changes will make it more convenient for you to use the self-serve print/copy services in the library and around campus.
