Offices, Carrels, and Lockers
Offices, carrels, and lockers are available in the library for seminary students in certain advanced degree programs. Below you will find information about the qualifications and conditions for these services.
library research offices
Research offices on the second and third floors are assigned by the library secretary to students writing a doctoral dissertation. Assignments are usually made upon approval of the Prospectus, but may be made upon completion of the Comprehensive Exams if space requires.
Offices are assigned primarily for convenience in the use of library materials, especially materials that cannot be taken out of the building. Any personal books, papers, or other property left in these offices are not the responsibility of the library.
Circulating materials will be charged to the advanced degree student for the semester, regardless of whether it is wanted for home or library use. Items will be due for return at a due date in January and August unless they are recalled at a prior date.

recalls
Because of the extended loan period offered to advanced degree students, any items charged to them can be recalled by other students or faculty members. When a book is recalled, an e-mail notice will be sent notifying the student of the book?s new due date. The recalled book must be returned by the new due date or fines begin accumulating at a rate of $5.00 per day.
You are responsible to maintain updated information in the library system. To give us updated information please stop by the main circulation desk. Failure to do so may result in the accruing of fines mentioned above. In the event you are not in a place to receive a recall notice (either by mail or e-mail), you are responsible to make the necessary arrangements to see that the notices are received by someone and that the book is promptly returned when requested. When a book is recalled from a doctoral student, that student may request it back after three weeks.
Under special circumstances the circulation staff may take library materials from an office. A note will be left informing the student of the item(s) taken, and they will be returned as soon as possible.
book renewal
Because of the nature of their degree programs, materials charged to advanced degree students are loaned for the length of the current semester. The two due dates for doctoral students are January 31 and August 31. Any books due in January must be brought to the circulation desk to be renewed or returned. Any books due in August may be renewed using the Internet, over the phone, or in person. Books due in January cannot be renewed by telephone or internet.
privilege
Some items in the library, such as dissertations and restricted books, are available for shelf privilege use only and cannot be taken out of the library. When shelf privilege books are charged to a student, the book will have a tag inserted in the front indicating that it is for shelf privilege only, and will have the due date stamped on it. This tag must remain in the book and be visible at all times. Reference books and other noncirculating items with a noncirculating label inside the front cover are NOT to be kept in an office under any circumstances in the student?s absence.
office renewal
In August, you will receive a yearly renewal form. Please fill it out and return it to the circulation desk as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in a relinquishing of your office.
office rules
- Any materials being left in your office for longer than one hour in your absence must be charged out to you. The library periodically searches offices for library items that are not checked out. These items will be removed.
- You are not guaranteed phone services in your office. When using a cellular phone, please set the ringer at low volume; when taking a call please move to a foyer or lounge.
- Do not bring furniture into the library.
- Do not tape, glue, or otherwise fasten signs, pictures, or clippings to the door, the door?s window, or to the walls.
- The library will close for chapel on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:45AM to 11:00AM. Everyone MUST leave the library during this time.
- No one, under any circumstances, should stay in the building after closing. Anyone found violating the rule will be subject to complete loss of library privileges and referral to seminary disciplinary procedures.
- Smoking is strictly prohibited.
- All offices have electrical outlets. Radios should be kept at low volume. Turn off computers before leaving for the day. Do not use extension cords, space heaters, or coffeepots.
- Those who have windows in their offices must close the windows before leaving the office.
- For the sake of pest control, eating and drinking is restricted to the graduate lounge on the third floor and the student lounge on the main floor. There is a small kitchenette in the graduate lounge with access to a refrigerator and a microwave. Please clean up after yourself.
- You must vacate your office before graduation and return the key to the library secretary. Failure to return a key, even if it is lost, will result in a $25 fine.
library research carrels
Research carrels on the main and second floors are assigned by the library secretary to students enrolled in the Ph.D., Th.M., and Ed.D. degrees. They are also temporarily assigned to visiting scholars and faculty. (The Music Librarian assigns carrels on the ground floor to D.M.A. candidates.)
These carrels are assigned primarily for convenience in the use of library materials, especially materials that cannot be taken out of the building. Any personal books, papers, or other property left on these carrels are not the responsibility of the library.
